Third Year Beginnings.

I was tempted to name this post "The Final Countdown" or something equally as corny, but nobody wants to start the year off with a terrible pun, (unless you're my Dad, then it's standard practice).

So, yes, third year, the beginning of the end and yet it feels like my University experience has just started... (Obviously this post already appears to be filled with clichés and all that jazz). After a lovely (albeit very geeky, but not very productive) summer, I'm back and ready to work my ass off. Currently this has involved acquiring a large wall chart and marking all the important (and scary) hand-in dates for Final Major Projects & Dissertations, it also has days marked off for when I need to update my blog... The plan is to update it at least every other Tuesday, so we'll see how successful that is. Days are also marked off for when I need to attempt to do academic reading for said dissertation. For those of you who wonder exactly what a pile of dissertation research is looks like, it's currently a little something like this:

Rather intimidating, yes? Especially when I tell you that the yellow folder is filled with photocopies and printouts of essays and book chapters as well. Eep.

However, on a slightly better note, this term will be spent developing our ideas for final films ready to pitch (in front of all three years of Animation, the tutors and a panel of industry professionals... although perhaps this is just as intimidating as the dissertation) and, hopefully, get selected to be put into production.

After spending the first half of the summer fretting because I had a complete lack of any creative ideas, I had inspiration hit me while I was on a train (somehow trains appear to be good for my creativity, in the past I've had a couple of ideas for other projects suddenly come to me while train travelling). Being paranoid about the possibility of potentially having to stand on a six hour train journey (Falmouth really isn't the most easily accessible place), I always book a seat reservation. And someone, it doesn't matter how empty the carriage is, will always pick to sit in my seat. Always. It annoys me so much. And then I thought, well, why couldn't I make this into an animated film? Obviously not just about a train seat, but why not ask people about all the random little things that specifically annoy them or they really hate? I could run around with a sound recorder and ask people the same question (a la Creature Comforts), then take their responses and turn them into an animated sequence.

Everyone I ask will have different opinions, so I want to replicate that with a range of different animation styles. In my Foundation year for our first 'Time and Image' workshop we had to create two images of ourselves and animate from one to the other, then we had to take our last image and animate it to the next person's first, it was really effective and despite everyone having created very different images, the piece worked as a whole. Sadly, I do not have the original video of everyone's work, but I have the section that I created, which you can watch below. I want to do the same for this project, animate all the 'phrases' separately, then take the last frame from one and animate it to the first of the next. I also want the film to have a kind of spontaneous feel, like the 'Lightbulb Boy' animation I did at the end of last year, each bit was really different, but it all flowed together.

After telling Andy and Derek and a few of my classmates my idea, it was suggested that instead of doing just things people disliked, that I include their likes/loves. So, currently I am in the process of juggling between the ideas of creating two separate films, a "Love" film and a "Hate" film, or making a completely combined one.

My idea is a relatively simple one, but I feel that if it is picked, it will have a much higher chance of getting completed than an a 5 minute long scripted idea. Working so closely (well, practically as a third year myself - I even got a 'medal' for "Wannabe 3rd Year" in our 'award' ceremony at the end of term last year) on Barista, I know that even with the best intentions and time management, it is not always possible to get everything done in time. Hopefully, by having an idea that works in segments, even if a section is not working, it can be scrapped and work without it. Even if I only worked with two other people on the entire thing, if we created five 10 second segements each, that would equate to a two and a half minute film to hand in.

And I leave you with a screenshot of the fruits of about an hour's work on Maya achieved (I've attempted to make something in order for a little test sequence I'm planning...):

Drawing Dump

Summer Drawings:

My Rabbits, Chilly & Molly.

They're the only ones who really sit still long enough to draw.

Scott Pilgrim Fangirling, a doodle for my friend Mark before he left for Uni, he lent me the books so I tucked this inside when I gave them back to him.

Diary

I collected my copy of the diary I did the cover for over the summer.

It actually looks pretty good...

...Except for where they put my name...

...bit of a design fail there.

Summer finished previews...

As I don't own a copy of After Effects myself, I was cheeky and nabbed my boyfriend's computer for a bit when I went to visit him to convert some of the finished frames into some clips finished animation. So, this is what the finished article will look like, the pet one is still a work in progress...

They're only 720p because I had to use Windows Movie Maker to mash the clips together and add some black bits (so Youtube doesn't hack off the endings/beginnings like it normally does...).

It was horrible.

With Flash comes the Crash...

So the multiple crashes start again.

Serves me right though, it was getting to be a pretty big file and I only had one copy (rookie error for an animation student I know, especially when working with the reliably unreliable Flash).

Tis fixed now, my scenes are now saved as separate files and I think I worked out that a symbol in one of the scenes was causing all the problems. Plus that scene had lots of tweens in, so Flash wasn't a particularly happy bunny, (ironically it's the scene in which my pet rabbits are, aharhar).

But it seems to be back on track! (Famous last words...) But at least since my RAM upgrade & shiny new external hardrive, my computer is being super quick at loading it up again, unlike the days of Formation, where it would take about 10 minutes to start up.

Hopefully I won't get a tally going again...

Scott Pilgrim...

...is freaking awesome!

I've become obsessed with the books, and since watching this video:

I now have a burning desire to try and animate all the books. Maybe one day.

Summer Work Preview...

A sneaky peek... which you can watch in 1080p glory...

I'm being quite ambitious with the ammount of things I'm trying to put in it, so wether it'll be finished by the end of summer is another question. But I'm still plodding on with it, doing bits every now and then, so just putting this up to prove I am still working on it and doing something!

inspiration...

Has finally hit and I'm actually doing something decent with my days :)

working in Flash, and here's some sneaky screenshots of what I'm up to. I'm creating a kind of animated autobiography.
I'm not sure if I'm going to upload work in progress videos, I think i'd like it to be a nice suprise...

If I have time after this I'm tempted to download Monkey Jam and do some stop motion like Emily has done.

Doing something else useful...

I've spent the past couple of days trying to readjust to the English climate after a week in wonderfully sunny Spain, trying to download Maya (and failing due to the Uni email being down so I can't get my activation email...), trying to get inspired and helping one of my friends with a request.

My friend Rob asked me if I could design a logo for his Ultimate team "Hawk Ultimate" (for those who don't know what Ultimate is, it's essentially competitive frisbee and has become pretty popular the last few years after finding it's way over here from America). He wanted one normal/more cartoony logo & one tribal one.

It's not really anything to do with animation, but it shows that i've done some drawing and actually used my graphics tablet at least once this summer. I used Flash to draw the outlines and coloured them in Photoshop.

Final versions (there's two versions of each, with alternating team colours):

Doing something useful... Actually pays off...

So, my design for the diary is actually going to be used :)

The only changes that needed to be made were to use an FXU (student union) logo instead of the universities...

A damn good find...

So, whilst stumbling through the urban wasteland of the internet in the search for textures (for the Sims no less, don't knock it Georg, it gave me an idea of what UV unwrapping was and texture painting before i'd even heard of Maya) and came across this gem of a website that is too good not to share.

http://webtreats.mysitemyway.com/

And the best thing is, it's all free:

"All royalty free stock icons, clip art, images, brushes, custom shapes, layer styles, layered PSD’s, patterns, textures, web elements, themes and other design resources on this website are free for use in both personal and commercial projects.

Doing something useful...

Ahha, my poor blog probably thought it was going to be safe and get a well deserved rest over the summer, but I'm afraid not...

I've decided I'm actually going to have a productive summer, do something useful and actually create some work. Sadly I haven't got round to that yet, however I have done something useful the past couple of days. I (along with countless others) got a message on facebook from the new Student Welfare President, Tim Port, asking about designs and volunteers for work towards Fresher's week etc. I decided that I would put forward a design for the front and back covers for the 2010/11 student diarys (a copy is given to each first year): "This can be of any appropriate image (preferably something that reflects Cornwall or Falmouth and must fit onto the A6 cover)" aaaand here's what I've come up with (oh and because it's A6, the previews will probably be HUGE):

FRONT:

BACK:

Whether anyone else will actually have a go at creating a cover is beyond my knowledge, but hopefully I shall find out if my design is any good, (I emailed Tim it earlier today, so am waiting to hear back). In case anyone was wondering (which you probably weren't, but shall be informed of anyway...) the textures are from scans of a load of paper (digital collage... the actual bits are very odd shapes as they're leftovers) I nabbed from the Art rooms at school during one of my projects in Sixth Form. I loved the paper and kept it for an unknown future project, I really want to use them for something animated, either background or character clothing, but I need to come up with any idea before I can do so! Hopefully I'll have an idea before the end of summer, but I'm going to Spain next week though, so hopefully it'll inspire me in some way :)
